Datil to Albuquerque to Flagstaff - the Disoriented Express

Thank you to Betty and John in Datil, who were gracious and hospitable while I worked on the cabin.*

Thanks to Joy, my young old friend in Albuquerque, who put me up in comfort while I worked on nothing.

*Poop.

It doesn't matter how many other people have done it. In fact, the more who precede you, the more crucial it is that you follow suit.

I left Albuquerque this morning with the understanding with myself that I'd stay overnight in-between if I got too tired. But, driving a Spud is not like wrestling an RV into alignment inside a lane, so I kept going.

Good to see my peeps in Flagstaff!

You mean you blinked DURING THE PHOTO OP, right??

Ah, my favorite Duck, you are looking mah-ve-lous! Whatever you're doing, keep doing it! I am jealous . . . standing on that corner is on my bucket list.

Thanks, Betty. You're too kind. And, I'll keep doing it!

Standing on a corner in Winslow, Arizona.

That is so cool.

I was there and took pretty much the same pics. Love the side of that building. did you know I posed for that picture with the guy.? No?

Did you bring your long johns with you to Flag?

I thought I recognized your butt, Jo. You bet I did bring my longies! And my running shoes for the first signs of real winter.

I felt iconic, Bill.

Flag by day ok! Go south young woman! Cottonwood or Wickenburg.... much better! No woolies needed there. :) -Maureen

Yes, that will be my next direction! The draw here is family, and then I'll turn and run like a stranger when the snow begins.

Have you ever been to the La Posada Hotel in Winslow? (I think that's the name of it.) It's just a street or two over from the standin on the corner statue. It's a Mary Coulter building that was renovated by artist Tina Mion and her husband. Tina is a brilliant artist who has had paintings in the Smithsonian and many of her paintings are displayed now at the hotel. It's a very cool stop!

We're heading down to Elephant Butte in a week or two. We keep just missing you! Bummer.

Pam, I heartily recommend the South Monticello Point part of the park, if you don't need external wifi. Beautiful views, quiet, HEATED shower room with long-running showers ... I'll be right there!

I didn't realize that was a Coulter building. Is that the couple who started the Snowdrift Gallery? I spotted enough things in Winslow to make a day trip, so next time I'll check things out.

[If you camp there, you have to call it SoMoPo - it's just that trendy.]

I just looked up the Snowdrift and it's a different couple. But then, I was looking at the La Posada website and saw that the guy who owns Snowdrift was also involved with the renovation of the hotel and his work is displayed there, too. They're all friends.

Tina Mion did this really cool, kind of macabre series of paintings on the first ladies. She also has a painting called "A New Years Eve Party in Purgatory for Suicides" that I really liked. Now I want to go back there again.

Thanks for the tip on Elephant Butte. I can't wait to get down there. We're at Ute Lake State Park now. We're the only people here! I love that. I'm not the most sociable person in the world so an empty park suits me just fine.

Good thing you brought the longies to Flag. Hell it was too cold for me there a month ago. Even going down into the 30s at night here. Enjoy time with the fam.

Back in the early '70s some friends and I drove through Winslow (prior to statue/flatbed). We sang like we were Jackson Browne himself and the first people to ever think of doing that.
I'm just sayin'.... that there is some good clean fun!!
Enjoy your peeps in Flagstaff.

I'm afraid you'll need to be a little clearer for me; still can't figure out which one is you. Are you the one on the FAR right; or are you the one on the FAR left? Pardon my confusion; I haven't had enough coffee yet.
P.S. Hope you enjoy my sentence structure; been practicing proper semicolon use. :)

Brenda, I can see you went to college!! Personally, I love semicolons; I find them fancy. And, I'm the one in the middle.

LOL Nancy! That's some fun in the style of 1970's Americana. I approve.

Gaelyn, the fam here likes it toasty inside the house. I woke up to find the cord to my electric blanket so I could turn it off, but there was no cord and no electric blanket. A few months back, I objected to being near here during the holidays and my cousin said "You can be INSIDE, you know."

Pam, I'll look up Mion's work before I go back, so I can sound informed if pressed.

Good times in Winslow and everywhere from one end of old 66 to the other in 06. I think we enjoyed that trip More than any we have ever taken, but we aint done yet.. Took us 8 months to Drive on every existing inch of the original 66 and the first two realignments that was possible ( maybe a tad of trespassing here and there) Came back on old U.S. 80 from Tybee Island Ga to San Diego.

Red, I didn't realize there was another coast-to-coast highway to be driven upon. 10 comes close, but no cigar (I had a polite argument with a trucker about that topic).

Why would they have a place for shortening? All my life I have wanted to be taller.

Good Luck Duck said...

They probably have a place for leavening, too, when all you want to do is stay.

We are in agreement about standing on certain street corners.
